NANS charges Pankshin college students to utilise government interventions

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), North Central Axis, has called on the students of the Plateau College of Health Technology, Pankshin, to take advantage of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND).
NELFUND is a federal government intervention programme aimed at addressing the financial burdens of students in tertiary institutions.
The call was made during a courtesy visit to the student union on Friday in Pankshin by a NANS delegation led by Mr Juwul Ephraim, the director of inter-campus affairs for the axis.
According to Ephraim, the purpose of the visit was to investigate why the college was not benefiting from NELFUND
It also aimed at addressing its non-participation in the association’s activities, and foster a better relationship between Nigerian students and the college management.
“NELFUND is an intervention by the federal government designed to offer financial leverage to all qualified Nigerian students, particularly the less privileged, to access higher education.
“I call on the Students Union Government (SUG) president to register with the association’s national body and participate in all activities to improve the visibility of this college,” he said.
Ephraim noted that being a union president comes with great responsibilities. Therefore, he charged the college’s union president to prioritise the welfare and needs of the students under his care.
“We promise to fight every struggle alongside you in collaboration with the NANS national body, so that we can share in both your pains and gains,” he added.
Mr Samuel Friday, the SUG president of the college, told the delegation that the institution had not been benefiting from NELFUND because its admission process was previously handled internally.
He explained that the school’s admissions did not go through the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).
According to him, the college was not registered on the JAMB portal earlier, which made accessing the NELFUND intervention difficult for the students.
“I assure you, the situation will be better next session as JAMB has finally recognised this college and will be in charge of admissions henceforth.
“The college management was concerned about our inability to access the fund. Therefore, they worked hard to ensure the college secured the necessary approvals from JAMB,” he said.
Regarding the college’s lack of registration and participation in NANS activities, Friday noted that he had only recently assumed office as the new SUG president.
“Under my leadership, the union of this college will be fully involved in every activity of the association to improve our visibility,” he added.
Friday commended the delegation for the hand of friendship extended to them, noting that with the support of the association, they could achieve the common goals of Nigerian students. (NAN)
