Kano, Aug. 29, 2026 (NAN) The Kano State Government says it will train 10,000 youths in vocational skills to promote self-reliance and discourage drug abuse and other social vices.
Mr Muhyi Magaji, Chairman, Kano State Multi-Agency Task Force on Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking (MATFDAT), disclosed this at a press briefing on Saturday in Kano.
Magaji said the government had identified 3,000 troubled youths and would add another 7,000, bringing the total to 10,000 beneficiaries.
He said the programme would be implemented within one year, beginning with detoxification and rehabilitation before vocational training and eventual reintegration.
According to him, beneficiaries will receive training in leatherwork, garment production, electrical engineering, mobile phone repairs and other relevant skills.
The chairman said skills acquisition centres had been identified in Kiru, Gezawa, Dambatta, Gwarzo, Minjibir and Madobi for the training.
He said the government would register the trainees with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) to strengthen their businesses and support them with starter packages.
“We have market here in Kano, so, at the end, you will find out that we are also building the potentiality of the state,” he said.
Magaji said the state government would sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with organisations that would implement the programme.
He explained that the initiative would enable the youths to become self-reliant and contribute positively to societal development.
The chairman also disclosed that the committee had arrested 71 suspected drug abusers, dealers and traffickers during its operations.
He said 41 suspects were currently serving jail terms at Kiru Reformatory Centre, while four notorious gang leaders were detained at a correctional facility.
Magaji urged residents to support efforts to combat drug abuse and illicit trafficking and help rehabilitate affected youths into productive members of society. (NAN)
