Kano, Aug. 27, 2026 (NAN) The Kano State Government has vowed to meet the December deadline to end water scarcity in the ancient city and its environs.
The Commissioner for Water Resources, Environment and Climate Change, Dahiru Muhammad-Hashim, made this known during an inspection tour of ongoing works at the Challawa Water Treatment Plant in Madobi Local Government Area.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the commissioner also inspected the Goron Dutse Reservoir in Gwale Local Government Area within Kano metropolis.
Muhammad-Hashim, who expressed satisfaction with the level of work at the sites visited, said plans were underway to carry out a test run of pumping water from the Challawa treatment plant to the Goron Dutse Reservoir for onward supply to the environs.
He said the government had already completed work at the Guzuguzu and Joda treatment schemes, adding that water had been supplied from Guzuguzu to residents of Kabo and Rimingado, while Joda was supplying residents of Gabasawa, Gezawa and Minjibir.
The commissioner said the completion of work at the Challawa treatment plant would go a long way in ending the water scarcity experienced in the state.
“This Challawa treatment plant specifically has a capacity of 220 million litres of water with three waterworks.
“The first waterworks is supplying 20 million litres, the second is 110 million litres, and the third waterworks is 90 million litres.
“Sadly, the first waterworks has been completely vandalised. Even when this administration came in, that waterworks was not in a condition to function. All the important parts of it had been fully vandalised,” he said.
According to him, Kano only have the second and third waterworks, which government is currently working to restore.
“When we took the assessment, we realised that we were not even having up to 30 per cent of what we are supposed to have.
“Our aim is to restore these waterworks from now to December to 100 per cent capacity.
“The Challawa treatment plant is responsible for supplying 81 per cent of the total water demand in Kano.
“They have given us assurance that the test run will be ready by the end of September,” he said.
The commissioner added that for decades, the people of Kano had been complaining about water scarcity, and reiterated the determination of the administration to provide a lasting solution to the problem.
“And this is evident in what we have seen currently. We have assessed the level of work done by the reputable company, CCECC.
“We have seen how the filtration units have been fully restored. Previously, only four units are working. Now all 16 have been opened up, and the work is currently ongoing.
“At the same time, we have seen the clarifiers, and we have been given assurance that by Monday, most of the things that need replacement and other forms of maintenance will be carried out,” he said.
Also speaking, the Managing Director of Kano State Water Board, Garba Ahmed-Bichi, commended Gov. Abba Kabir-Yusuf for the concerted efforts towards addressing the issue of water scarcity head-on in the state.
Ahmed-Bichi said for years, none of the reservoirs was holding any water because water was not being pumped to them from Challawa, but thanked the governor for changing the narrative.
Earlier, the CCECC Project Manager, Tang Yiran, pledged to deliver quality work within the stipulated time frame of December.
