Lagos, Aug. 25, 2026 (NAN) The Rector of Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH), Dr Ibraheem Abdul, has urged using education instead of relying solely on arrests in tackling vices among the youth.
He warned that, if unchecked, vices could destroy the future of many youths.
Abdul spoke when a delegation from Lagos State Security Trust Fund led by Dr Oladimeji Moses visited the institution to explore strategic partnership on security and campaign against vices by the youth, according to a statement.
The statement was issued by Mr Adekunle Adams, Deputy Registrar, Centre for Information, Communication and Public Relations, YABATECH, on Monday.
Abdul said that protecting youths against vices would require preventive education and early interventions.
He said that education remained critical to securing Nigeria’s future, warning that allowing youths to embrace criminal influences could deprive Nigeria of future leaders, professionals and innovators.
The rector urged tertiary institutions to promote responsible citizenship.
Abdul commended Lagos State Security Trust Fund’s preventive approach, particularly its focus on sensitising youths against vices, and pledged YABATECH’s support for such a programme.
He said that protecting young people remained a collective responsibility of institutions, government agencies, security organisations, parents, alumni associations and other stakeholders.
He quoted Moses, a YABATECH alumnus, as saying that the organisation selected the college for the campaign because of its large youth population.
Abdul also quoted Moses as saying that the organisation had sensitised more than 1,000 students of YABATECH against crime, negative peer influence and related dangers. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
