Abuja, Aug. 22, 2026 (NAN) The President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), Habu Gumel, has congratulated the senior female national volleyball team for qualifying for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
Tony Nezianya, Public Relations Officer (PRO), NOC, said in a statement on Saturday that the team secured its qualification after defeating Morocco 2-0 in a decisive encounter, thereby ending Nigeria’s 16-year absence from the Olympic volleyball event.
According to him, Gumel commended the team for the feat and praised the President of the Nigeria Volleyball Federation, Musa Nimrod, for his tireless efforts towards the development of volleyball in the country.
“I am happy and indeed excited that the team pulled this victory through.
“We are no longer a pushover on the international stage,” Gumel was quoted as saying.
The NOC president, who is also a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and a former president of the Nigeria Volleyball Federation, noted that volleyball had become the first Nigerian team sport to qualify for the 2028 Olympic Games.
Gumel also congratulated the players, coaches and officials for their determination and commitment in securing the Olympic berth.
He urged other national teams currently seeking qualification for the Games to emulate the volleyball team’s achievement.
“I wish similar success to all other national teams working hard to secure their places in Team Nigeria’s contingent to the Games,” he said.
Nezianya quoted Gumel as also saying that the NOC remained committed to supporting Nigerian athletes and teams in their preparations for the 2028 Olympic Games. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
