The Anambra State Government has commenced plans to rehabilitate the Onitsha Divisional Library as part of efforts to restore the facility as a centre for learning, research and intellectual development.
The initiative follows an inspection visit by the Commissioner for Information and Value Reformation, Dr. Law Mefor, who assessed the condition of the library and identified areas requiring urgent government intervention.
Speaking during the visit, Dr. Mefor explained that the inspection was part of his ongoing working tour of offices and institutions under the Ministry of Information and Value Reformation.
According to him, the tour is aimed at evaluating operations, interacting with staff, understanding their challenges and identifying areas where government support is needed.
He described the condition of the library as one that requires immediate attention and assured staff that the state government would begin plans to rehabilitate the facility and improve its surroundings to create a more conducive environment for reading, learning and research.
The commissioner noted that restoring the library would encourage greater patronage by students, researchers, professionals and members of the public while strengthening the state’s commitment to education and human capital development.
Dr. Mefor was accompanied on the inspection by the Chairman of Onitsha North Local Government Area, Hon. Tony Nworah; the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Dr. Obiageli Uchebo; the Acting Managing Director of the Anambra Broadcasting Service (ABS), Mrs. Juliet Mbonu-Ike, and other government officials.
Responding on behalf of the library’s management and staff, the Director of the Onitsha Divisional Library, Mrs. Obioma Obalum, expressed appreciation for the visit, describing it as timely and encouraging.
She expressed confidence that the government’s intervention would mark the beginning of a new phase for the library.
The planned rehabilitation is expected to preserve and modernise one of the state’s key public learning facilities, improve access to educational resources and promote a stronger reading culture across the community.
Government officials believe the project will not only restore the physical structure of the library but also reinforce its role in supporting academic excellence, research and lifelong learning in Anambra State.
