The Kogi Equity Movement (KEM) has called for a power shift to the Yoruba-speaking Okun people of Kogi West Senatorial District ahead of the 2027 governorship election, describing the move as a step toward justice, equity and balanced development in the state.
In a statement issued on behalf of the movement, its Convener, Arc. Amdii A. Amdii Zaguru, said the 2027 governorship poll offers a historic opportunity to address what he described as years of political imbalance and exclusion.
According to Zaguru, the Okun people possess the leadership capacity, population and commitment needed to provide purposeful governance for Kogi State.
He argued that the governorship should rotate to the district to promote fairness and strengthen unity among the state’s diverse ethnic and political groups.
The movement also expressed concern over what it described as the prolonged neglect of Bassa Local Government Area, insisting that the area deserves greater attention in the state’s governance and development agenda.
It maintained that an Okun-led administration would prioritize infrastructure development, improved security, employment opportunities and better social services across underserved communities, including Bassa.
KEM called on political leaders, traditional rulers, youths, women and civil society organisations across Kogi’s three senatorial districts to support the emergence of an Okun governor in 2027 in the interest of peace, inclusion and sustainable development.
The group further announced plans to embark on statewide consultations, grassroots mobilisation and stakeholder engagements in the coming weeks as part of efforts to build support for what it described as a campaign for political equity in Kogi State.
