A Catholic priest, Rev. Fr. John Konyeke, has urged Christians to deepen their relationship with God by recognizing their true worth in Christ, valuing His word, and aligning their lives with His divine purpose.
Fr. Konyeke made the call on Sunday while delivering the homily at the thanksgiving Mass marking the 80th birthday celebration of Mr. Boniface Ebonwu at the Catholic Church of the Ascension in Asaba, Delta State.
Reflecting on the biblical account of Mary Magdalene, the priest said her life was transformed after encountering Jesus Christ, who delivered her from years of suffering and restored her dignity.
He noted that Mary Magdalene remained devoted to Christ because of the life-changing impact of that encounter, stressing that genuine faith begins with knowing and appreciating Jesus.
According to him, Christians should focus less on personal desires and instead seek to understand God’s will for their lives.
“You must know Jesus before you can truly love Him,” he said, encouraging worshippers to continually ask, “What does God want?” rather than pursuing only their personal ambitions.
Fr. Konyeke also urged the faithful to remain grateful for God’s blessings and to cultivate a life of appreciation, regardless of their circumstances.
He offered prayers for the celebrant, Mr. Boniface Ebonwu, thanking God for his life and praying for continued good health, wisdom, and divine protection.
Mr. Ebonwu, a former manager of The Pointer newspaper who previously served at The Nigerian Observer, attended the thanksgiving service alongside his children, grandchildren, relatives, friends, and well-wishers.
Among those present at the celebration were Rev. Fr. Hilary Ibegbulem, Rev. Fr. John-Paul Anakwuo, the Senior Special Assistant on Media to Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, Comrade Fidelis Egugbo, retired civil servants, and other invited guests.
