The Managing Director of Rima River Basin Development Authority, Sokoto, Abubakar Malam, has called on farmers and residents residing near or along the banks of River Rima in Sokoto and Kebbi States to be vigilant to avoid lost of lives and property in the event of flood disaster.
While speaking to newsmen in Birnin Kebbi on Friday, Malam stressed that: “As the rainy season heightens, it is important to draw attention to the increasing risks of flooding and related disasters across many parts of Nigeria, including communities in Sokoto and Kebbi States,”
In line with the 2026 Seasonal Climate Prediction and Annual Flood Outlook, the Managing Director strongly advised residents, community leaders, and local authorities in flood-prone areas to take proactive measures to reduce risks and protect lives and property.
“Communities are encouraged to clear drainage channels, avoid indiscriminate dumping of waste in waterways, relocate from highly flood-prone locations where necessary, and strictly heed early warning advisories issued by relevant authorities. Parents should also ensure that children do not play in flood waters or around erosion-prone areas during heavy rainfall”, he emphasized.
Malam said the gesture was not just a routine caution but a lifesaving direct and the move reflected the agency’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property through transparent water management and timely alerts.
He stated that to be able to build a robust nation capable of feeding its people through indigenous food production, citizens must stay away from actions and inactions that would negatively affect their survival, especially by taking precautionary measures against natural disasters.
The Managing Director, a holder of traditional tittle of Shatiman Gwandu, however called on Nigerians to rally round both the Federal and State Governments by supporting their developmental policies and programmes in order to take the nation to higher heights.
