Anambra commissioner vows justice after teen gang-raped in Nawfia

Anambra State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Mrs Esther Onyekesi, has condemned the gang rape of a 16-year-old girl in Nawfia, Njikoka Local Government Area, and vowed to ensure all suspects are prosecuted.

Onyekesi became emotional when the victim was brought to her office on Wednesday. She expressed outrage over the trauma the teenager suffered at the hands of adults meant to protect her.

A medical report presented to the Commissioner confirmed the teenager is two months pregnant due to repeated sexual assaults. Her identity is being withheld for her protection.

The case was reported to the Commissioner by a Catholic Priest from Nawfia who intervened after learning of the abuse.

According to the victim, her guardian assaulted her every night before other men joined in the attacks. She said a Good Samaritan helped rescue her last week. She also disclosed that the guardian’s wife, a stroke patient, was unable to intervene.

Onyekesi condemned the abuse and urged men to protect women and girls rather than exploit their vulnerability. She assured the teenager of her safety and pledged that her office would follow the case to ensure justice.

The victim told the commissioner that police at the Nawfia Division have arrested two of the eight suspects, while six remain at large. The case is being handled at the Nawfia Police Station.

If you or someone you know is experiencing sexual abuse, contact the Anambra State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare or report to the nearest police station.
