Residents of Ogidi community in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State have appealed for urgent government intervention following persistent flooding that has continued to destroy roads, homes, farmlands and businesses in the area.

The worsening flood situation has raised serious concerns among community leaders, youths and residents, who described the condition as unbearable and a major threat to livelihoods and public safety.

During a peaceful protest held in the community, youths carrying placards called attention to the devastating impact of the recurring floods, especially during heavy rainfall. They lamented that the disaster has disrupted movement, damaged infrastructure and affected economic activities across the town.

Speaking during the protest, President of Ogidi Youths, Chris Obi-Okafor, described the flooding as a humanitarian crisis requiring immediate intervention from relevant authorities.

According to him, several roads become impassable whenever it rains, while homes, farmlands and economic trees have been severely damaged. He added that many businesses are gradually collapsing due to the persistent environmental challenge.

Obi-Okafor also noted that schoolchildren are among the worst affected, as flooded roads often prevent them from attending classes during rainy periods. He warned that the situation could negatively affect the future educational and economic development of the community if urgent action is not taken.

The youth leader appealed to the Federal Government under President Bola Tinubu and the Anambra State Government led by Governor Chukwuma Soludo to provide lasting solutions to the recurring flood menace.

Also speaking, the traditional ruler of Ogidi, Igwe Alexander Onyido, expressed concern over the continuous flooding of major roads and market areas after heavy rainfall.

The monarch stated that the situation has disrupted commercial activities, displaced residents and created serious transportation and economic difficulties within the community.

He assured residents that efforts were ongoing to engage the state government on the need for immediate intervention to prevent possible loss of lives and reduce the hardship being experienced by the people.

Community leaders emphasized that the protest was peaceful and motivated solely by the need to draw urgent attention to the suffering of residents, while urging authorities to respond swiftly before the situation worsens further.
