Popular catholic priest, Monsignor Gabriel Osu, passes away at 72

The Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos has announced the passing of Very Rev. Monsignor Gabriel Osu.

According to a statement released by the Archdiocese, Monsignor Osu died on Friday, May 8, 2026, at the age of 72.

Born on September 5, 1954, Monsignor Osu hailed from Ogbego Quarters in Ubulu-Uku, Aniocha South Local Government Area of Delta State.

He was ordained a priest of the Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos on December 5, 1981, and dedicated several decades of his life to pastoral and administrative service within the Church.

Throughout his ministry, Monsignor Osu served in various parishes and institutions, including Holy Cross Cathedral, Lagos; St. Gregory’s College, Ikoyi; St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Oshodi; St. Paul Catholic Church, Ebute-Metta; and Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church, Lekki.

He also served for many years as the Lagos Archdiocesan Director of Social Communications. Until his death, he resided at Our Lady Star of the Sea Parish, Northern Foreshore Estate, Lekki.

The Archdiocese stated that funeral arrangements will be announced in due course.

The Church further called on the faithful to pray for the peaceful repose of Monsignor Osu’s soul and for strength and comfort for all those mourning his passing.
