Kebbi women affairs ministry trains 5000 women in self reliance, marries off 600 couples

Kebbi State Government has so far trained 5000 women on skills acquisition, provided them with starter kits and tools for self reliance.

The Commissioner for Women Affairs and Child Development, Halima Hassan Kamba, announced this in Birnin Kebbi on Monday, at a news briefing.

Kamba added that Kebbi has signed a Memorandum of Understanding, MOU, with the World Bank through the Nigerian Women Project under which 150,000 women would benefit with training, empowerment and community investment fund as grant.

“About five local government areas have been enrolled, all facilitators in the programme are women, about 120 women are empowered as facilitators earning monthly allowances”, she said.

The Commissioner said the incumbent administration of Governor Nasir Idris had conducted annual mass wedding of 300 couples twice, in the last two years,which brought the total number tovices.0 brides and bride grooms.

“Another mass wedding has been scheduled for June this year to help the less privileged in the society and reduce immorality, marriage barriers, societal ills and other vices

“In the period under review, Kebbi has rescued and repatriated 45 trafficked children in collaboration with NAPTIP who have been reunited with their parents.

“Also, 105 children remanded in Remand Home have been rehabilitated and reunited with their families, while the Remand Home has been relocated to a new site, renovated and furnished by incumbent administration”, the Commissioner stated.

She further revealed that the state government had renovated, upgraded and commissioned the new Orphanage, known as”the Kauran Gwandu Children’s Home” at Kawara, to provide more conducive atmosphere for fostering of orphans and other less privileged children.

The administration, according to her, had purchased a house, tricycles, motorcycles, household materials as well as offer support for marriage to orphans under Governor Nasir Idris while overgrown orphans were weaned, graduated and provided with life support materials and cash to enable them start business for self reliance.
