Political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections are beginning to reshape the landscape in Anambra State as former APGA senatorial aspirant, Chief Ebuka Onunkwo, has officially defected to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).

Onunkwo, who previously contested the APGA primary election for the Anambra South Senatorial District following the death of Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, failed to secure the party’s ticket. His participation in the primary had reportedly created tension within the party in the district.

Despite recently expressing interest in contesting the APGA primaries again, Onunkwo has now switched allegiance to the NDC. He formally joined the party during its national convention held on Saturday in Abuja.

His defection is said to be causing concern within APGA ranks in Anambra South, with reports indicating that many of his supporters and loyalists are preparing to move with him to the NDC.

Speaking on the decision, Onunkwo explained that the move was driven by his determination to fulfil his promise to supporters by remaining active in the race to represent the district at the national level. According to him, the NDC offers a platform that supports grassroots participation and inclusiveness.

He also pledged to pursue people-oriented representation focused on economic growth, youth empowerment, and community development across Anambra South.

Members of his campaign team described the movement as a broad-based political initiative attracting support from different political interests within the senatorial district.
