The Civil Society Council of Nigeria (NCSCN) has vehemently denied claims made by the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) that the Department of State Security Services (DSS) raided their office.
At a press conference in Abuja on Wednesday, Blessing AKINLOSOTU, Executive Director of NCSCN, accused SERAP of spreading misinformation and sensationalism. NCSCN conducted a verification probe and visited the FCT Command of the DSS to get a balanced view of the story, only to find that the incident had been twisted and shrouded with untrue and misleading narrations.
AKINLOSOTU stated that the findings of their investigation revealed that the story had been misrepresented to the public, capable of inciting contempt and defaming the DSS Management in the FCT. The NCSCN has called out SERAP for their alleged misinformation and urged the public to be cautious of sensationalized reports.
“While acknowledging isolated instances of overzealousness and unprofessional conduct by some DSS officers in the past, it’s essential to set the record straight and present matters accurately, handling each issue separately and within context. Security matters are sensitive and volatile, and misrepresentation can lead to social unrest and disruption of peace and order.
The Civil Society Council is astonished that a reputable organization like SERAP would grossly misrepresent a routine visit and harmless interaction between junior DSS officers and SERAP staff, intended for familiarization with the new leadership. Our findings reveal no evidence of invasion, intimidation, occupation, harshness, or harassment.
We urge SERAP to be more accurate and responsible in their reporting, especially on sensitive security matters, to maintain peace and order in our society.”
NCSCN remains steadfast in its commitment to upholding truth, condemning poor governance and leadership, and acknowledging satisfactory performances. We commend the new leadership of the Department of State Services (DSS) under Director General Mr. Tosin Ajayi, a seasoned security expert and professional. We look forward to a harmonious working relationship, striving together for Nigeria’s betterment. We anticipate a formal visit soon to explore strategic collaboration areas and foster a productive partnership.”
