In a landmark decision, the Kano State House of Assembly has passed a repeal bill abolishing the Emirates Council Law, effectively dissolving the five emirates created by former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje in 2019. This move marks a significant shift in the state’s traditional leadership structure, returning to the Single Emirate System.
Repeal of Emirates Council Law_: The Kano State House of Assembly has passed a repeal bill abolishing the Emirates Council Law, effectively dissolving the five emirates created in 2019.
The five emirates – Bichi, Rano, Gaya, Karaye, and Kano – have been dissolved, and all offices established under the repealed law have been set aside.
The repeal bill revives the Single Emirate System in Kano, with the Emir of Kano being the sole traditional ruler in the state.
The law now authorizes the governor to call upon traditional kingmakers to choose a new emir, as there are no longer active emirs in any of the five emirates.
The lawmakers have emphasized the need to restore the unity and dignity of Kano, which was allegedly diminished by the creation of additional emirates.
This development raises questions about the future of the deposed emirs and the potential return of Lamido Sanusi as the Emir of Kano.
