An Anambra State High Court in Awka has handed down a death sentence to Ifeanyi Anizoba Jr. for the killing of own father.
Delivering judgment, Justice Chukwudi Okaa ruled that the prosecution successfully proved its case beyond reasonable doubt, leading to the defendant’s conviction.
According to the prosecution, led by Chief State Counsel, Mrs. Chiamaka Chukwuka, the incident occurred on December 24, 2019, at Nodu Village in Awka following a dispute between the defendant and his father.
During the altercation, the defendant pushed his father, causing him to hit his head against a wall and lose consciousness.
The court heard that after the incident, the defendant left his father unattended for two days without seeking medical help.
He reportedly locked him in a room, where he remained until neighbours noticed a foul smell and raised the alarm. The body was later discovered by family members.
Three witnesses testified for the prosecution, including a relative of the deceased, the investigating police officer, and the medical doctor who conducted the autopsy.
The defendant, who was initially without legal representation, was later provided a lawyer from the Office of the Public Defender. The defence presented two witnesses and denied responsibility for the death.
However, Justice Okaa held that the evidence clearly showed that the defendant’s actions led to his father’s death, and he was subsequently convicted and sentenced to death by hanging.
