In a significant development, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have suspended their industrial action for one week, effective immediately. This decision comes after a joint extraordinary national executive council meeting of the unions in Abuja on Tuesday.

According to TUC President Festus Osifo, the suspension is aimed at allowing for further negotiations on the new minimum wage and electricity tariff hike. The unions had embarked on a strike on Monday, crippling critical sectors of the economy, including schools, businesses, hospitals, and airports. The national grid was also shut down, leaving the nation in darkness.

The strike was prompted by the lack of consensus on a new minimum wage and the recent hike in electricity tariff. Labour leaders had been negotiating with the government, but the talks had reached an impasse. The suspension of the strike offers a temporary reprieve, and negotiations are expected to resume in the coming days.

The development is seen as a positive step towards resolving the labour dispute, and Nigerians hope for a speedy resolution to the crisis.
