Caritas-Nig. raises funds for skills centre, rural water supply

By Bridget Ikyado

The Catholic Caritas Foundation of Nigeria on Sunday announced plans to set up a national skills development centre and embark on rural water supply projects.

It said that the aim was to provide skills to youth, address unemployment and ensure provision of potable water in the country.

The Executive Secretary of the foundation, Rev. Fr. Uchechukwu Obodoechina made this known in Abuja during the 13th anniversary of the organisation, where funds were raised in support of the projects.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the foundation is the official relief and development arm of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria.

Obodoechina said they would welcome more support and partnership to ensure timely execution of the projects.

He said that though government’s primary duties include security, provision of water, food, good roads and other basic amenities, the foundation would intervene to bridge existing gaps.

“It is not easy for any of our governments to provide these essentials.

“Instead of bemoaning the lack of good governance, the church is doing what she can with her little resources of mobilising the people and then supporting them as much as she could.

“We have invited people to come and support what we are doing and what we want to do, an employment programme for Nigerian youths,” he said.

The executive secretary commended individuals and corporate organisations supporting the foundation, and called for more assistance to support the rising humanitarian needs in the country. (NAN)
