Jan 17, 2023 – Andoni local government, once Cholera endemic area in Rivers has recently announced a zero Cholera related death in two years through robust water intervention by Brr. Erastus Awortu lead administration.
Dr Joseph Urang, medical practitioner and Field Epidemiologist of the state made the observation on Monday at Oron-ija, a community in Andoni during commissioning of a water project.
The project which consisted of about 20,000 liters steel water storage tank, treatment plant and solar panels system would ensure steady water supply for the community.
The project was officially unveiled by Mr Kagbang Ofiks, Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for Andoni State Constituency in the forthcoming general elections.
It should be recalled that a water scheme was initiated as part of efforts to combat cholera and check infant mortality upon inception of the Awortu lead administration.
The scheme which targeted eleven wards of the area has so far recorded more than 70 per cent coverage in about 19 months of the administration.
Responding to the achievement, Urang also Chief Medical Director of the area council noted that the area has eventually sumounted cholera outbreaks through provision of potable water.
“As a field epedermiologist who had practiced more then years in the state, I know that Andoni is endemic to cholera disease, findings had shown that the only reason for cholerae outbreaks was non-availability of potable water.
On his part, HRH. Bathlomew Egopyork, Paramount Ruler of Oron-ija applauded the council for the intervention while also urging beneficiaries to shun vandalism and jealously protect the project.
Meanwhile, women and residents of the community have applauded the council chairman and his team for good governance at the grassroots.
