IWD:Kaduna Peace Commission,CIPP sensitises women on climate change

Kaduna State Peace Commission in conjunction with Center for Gender Studies of Kaduna State University, as well as Community Initiatives to Promote Peace (CIPP)on Friday organised a sensitisation workshop for women on the significance of climate change.

The event, which is part of activities marking the International Women Day

Speaking on the event, Dr Saleh Momale , Executive Vice Chairman ,Kaduna Peace Commission, said it would facilitate exchange of knowledge on ways to reduce women’s vulnerability to the security implications of climate change.

He explains that the participants would further understand how the changing climatic condition was partly responsible for some of the conflicts being witnessed.

“And with this to see how they can better response and educate their communities on some of the drivers to create environment for peaceful and harmonious coexistence”he said

On her parts, Amina Bello representative of Mercy Corps, said women were important players in issues pertaining climate change because they had knowledge about certain processes, such as managing water resources.

According to her, the impact of climate change on women has been exacerbated by lack of robust decision-making power within local communities.

She said Mercy Corps under the USAID funded Community Initiatives to Promote Peace(CIPP) Activity Which is currently implementing.

While reminding that gender gap persist and women are still a small minority of elected representatives and political decision-makers in Nigeria despite substantial

In her presentation, Prof Hauwa Yusuf, Director, Center for Gender Studies ,Kaduna state University, said talking about gender equality did not mean women must be equal to men, but should have equal opportunities.

Speaking in an interview ,Hajiya Amina Kazaure, General coordinator women interfaith council, Kaduna said it is a very important event for women and the activities as well

She calls on women to be passivier, determine by showing their full values and capacities in all their activities adding that with more focus they can achieve a greater success.

“If you know what you want ,you work for it , stand by it , you can see that no man can challenge you “she said

In an interview , Imam Ma’aruf Raji chief Iman NASFAT Kaduna state ,said Islam condemned bias totally against women in all aspects

He said Islam called for justice adding that just is also talking about equity which is justice and fairness towards women

He said their is need for women to also have sense of belonging to civic leadership “But not spiritual leadership or being Imam in the mosque,but playing certain role in the society

He further call on women to always be peace builders as mother and also have piety and righteous what ever they do
