The Managing Director, Nigeria Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), Mr Mathew Pwajok, says timely information sharing and collaborative efforts are key to effectively runing of the aviation sector.
Pwajok made this known at the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Forum on Sunday in Abuja.
He denied allegation that the relationship among the agencies operating at the airport.was not cordial.
According to him, all the agencies are sharing information and collaborating for an efficient aviation sector.
“The Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria, the Nigerian Air Space Management Agency, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, we all have a cordial working relationship.
“Just like any other entity, there might be a few areas where our responsibilities might overlap.
“The airport authority are like the landlords, they own the airport, we work in the airport to ensure safety of flights landing and taking off, so we work collaboratively.
“If there are areas of misunderstanding sincerely speaking, it might be at the minute level and that has to do with sensitising people at the lower level, where people are not fully acquainted.
“You must understand the responsibility of every agency and there are responsibilities in respect to security and safety at the airport and you must respect that.
“Other than that, we have a very good working relationship with these agencies because we exchange information and data with them on a daily basis,”he said.
Pwajok said in order to enhance the working relationship of the agencies at the airport, the International Aviation Organisation introduced what is called Collective Decision Making.
According to him, airport collaborative decision making requires that all airport stakeholders regularly meet and interact to enhance collective decision making and also at a strategic level to have collaborative planning.
“For example, the instrument landing system also requires the lighting system to be commensurate with the landing system, so there is requirement for collaborative planning.
“When you are deploying any system, the user which are the airlines, must be carried along. The regulatory agencies, who will regulate the use of that equipment that is, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority must be carried along.
“Also the equipment may be located on
a piece of land that belongs to FAAN, they also must be carried along.
“The Nigerian metrological agency provides us with weather information and that exchange is on a regular basis; it must be adequate, regular and timely to the airlines that will use it, so if it is not timely they are likely to complain.
“So issues like that are not significant enough to say we have a bad working relationship, but at the top,we have very good working relationship,” Kwajo said.
NAMA boss, however, said implementing the collaborative airport decision making was key to ensure that the sector had an effective working relationship in spite of the overlap in responsibilities and jurisdiction.
He described the airport as a community, “so collaborative decision making requires information flow”.
