A member of the House of Representatives representing Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) and Bwari Federal Constituency, Micah Jiba, is providing free cataract surgery for members of his Constituency.
The five-day programme, which commenced on Monday in Abuja, is giving free cataract surgery and glaucoma treatment to10,000 members of the Constituency.
The free medical outreach being supervised by the National Primary Health Centre, will hold simultaneously in Kubwa, Gwarinpa and Bwari General Hospitals for the five days.
Addressing newsmen at the Gwarinpa General Hospital, Jiba described eyes as important organs of the body, saying without sight, living automatically become zero.
Jiba said that no fewer than 20 medical consultants were engaged in the medical outreach.
” I know the challenges that our people are facing. When we talk of the organs in the body system, the major one is eye or the sight.
” So I go deeply in my study and I come out with this particular project, that I think I should do to assist my people because I have seen the way my people are suffering due to poor sight.
“The total number of people that will benefit from this free cataract surgery, glaucoma treatment and other eyes related illness is 10,000.
” And I believe the Consultants handling the medical treatment will do their work effective,” he said .
Dr Suleiman Lamorde, NPHCDA Programme Officer said in his remarks that the organisation would continue to partner the National Assembly to provide effective healthcare services to the people.
According to him, the national primary healthcare development agency is happy to partner with the lawmaker representing AMAC and Bwari Federal Constituency on the free medical outreach.
Lamorde said the essence of the medical outreach was to bring health care service closer to the people.
” We at the National Primary Health Centre Development Agency, ours is to ensure standard, quality and from what we have seen so far, the treatment has a quality that we want to see.
” I have interacted with about four Consultants Opthalmologist and I have seen the drugs they are given, and to some extent I am very satisfied that the team is doing a good job,” he said.
The FCT Chairman of People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Mr Zaka Sunday, described the free medical outreach as ‘first of kind’ and commended the lawmaker for the gesture.
Mrs Ruth Yakubu, one of the beneficiaries, thanked the lawmaker for coming to their aid.
