The outgoing German Chancellor, Angela Merkel’s conservative bloc fell to a new low in an opinion poll published on Friday following their disastrous showing in the elections in September.
As the focus turned to winners of the election, the Social Democrats (SPD) are currently working to form a coalition with two smaller parties.
Merkel’s conservative alliance of the Christian Democrats (CDU) and their Bavarian allies, the Christian Social Union (CSU), plunged to a rating of just 19 per cent.
The poll by the Wahlen research group was in line with other recent polls that had seen the CDU/CSU, which had dominated Germany in the era since World War II, decline to unheard lows below 20 per cent.
The Wahlen poll put the SPD on 28 per cent, with the Greens on 17 per cent and the pro-business Free Democrats (FDP) on 13 per cent.
These three parties were continuing their talks on Friday to build a governing coalition, with a preliminary announcement on progress expected later in the day.
The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) was on 11 per cent, and the hard-left Die Linke on five per cent.
In the Sept. 26 elections, according to preliminary figures, the CDU/CSU took 24.1 per cent and the SPD 25.7.
The Greens came in at 14.8 and the FDP at 11.5 per cent. The AfD secured 10.3 per cent and Die Linke 4.9 per cent.
The official results are expected on Friday.
