Taraba @30: Kente calls for self examination
Chief David Sabo Kente, has called on the good people of Taraba to take a self reassessment, with a view to making amends and moving the state to enviable heights as it clocks 30 years since it was created.
Kente, who spoke in an interview with Aluta news, said the last 30 years of Taraba as a state had been full of both the good and the not-so-great things, yet the state was still thriving.
According to him Taraba did not get the motto; “Nature’s Gift to the Nation”, by accident, it is indeed a state blessed with human and natural resources that makes it to survive and thrive.
Being a prominent figure in the state, and following its progress, Kente pointed out that as much as the state had been endowed with many resources, the anniversary was a time for all to look back at the strides and the mistakes made, from the leaders to the laity.
“For the past 30 years, Taraba State has continued to thrive, in spite of the very many challenges it often faced over time. Taraba is a blessed state with all it needs to succeed, I would say that the resources have been under-utilised.
“In times like this, we must ask ourselves, what we have achieved in the last 30 years. As the years go by, are we growing, or are we taking two steps forward and three backwards? Have our leaders been doing right by us? Our next steps should depend on our answers to these questions,’’ he said.
“Kente said if God could bless Taraba with virtually all the natural the resources it required to build even a nation complete with world class facilities and guarantee wealth creation for its citizens, it meant God Himself from the beginning chose make Taraba a blessed state among others.
“I believe God created us together with the abundance of resources to recreate our own world; therefore, taking our destiny into our hands is a just course that we must see as non-negotiable,’’ he said.
The philanthropist and politician, who expressed thanks to God for his faithfulness over the years, also prayed for God’s guidance and leadership in the coming years.
“We thank God for all he has been doing for us over the years. We also thank God for where we are and where he is taking us to. It is my earnest prayer that Taraba will continue to thrive and get better with age just like fine wine,’’ Kente prayed.
He therefore, reminded the people of Taraba of the importance of reaching out to those in need, extending kindness, love and goodwill.
“Let us therefore remember to always extend grace one to another. Of what gain is it that you have plenty in the midst of those who have nothing?.
Speaking on the way forward on improving and reviving the state from the economic and security challenges it was facing like many others, Kente stressed that injustice and inequality by leaders had continued to foster division amongst the people.
“The lack of unity and security challenges the state has been facing has continued to be the bane of underdevelopment and economy growth of Tarabans. Of course no state can thrive when there is no relative peace and serenity for businesses and other activities to thrive,’’ he said.
Kente, therefore, advised that the best solution to every conflict was being fair to all concerned and giving people their entitlement as and when due, adding that; “Give Caesar what belongs to Caesar”.
According to him, at the end of the day, only the people would be able to re-write history and change the narrative.
He said all they needed to do was look inwards and make the right choices for the betterment of the state, including going with the rugged and not the most loved because only the rugged make things happen as they were not afraid to try.
