At least 20 patients awaiting various surgical procedures at the General Hospital, Calabar, have received financial assistance, alongside other patients requiring oxygen and support to settle their medical bills.
Pregnant women and nursing mothers were also among the beneficiaries of the intervention by the APC Women Mobilisation Team of the party’s Campaign Council.
The team, led by its deputy director, Dr Betta Edu, visited the hospital on Saturday, moving from one ward to another to assist patients with medical bills, surgery costs and the purchase of oxygen.
Speaking during the visit, Edu recounted the case of a woman who lost her baby during delivery and was subsequently unable to pay her hospital bills.
She said the team consoled the woman and settled her outstanding bills to enable her to leave the hospital.
“We met several other patients who had just undergone surgery and were recuperating. We also met some who were yet to undergo surgery, and we had to encourage them and keep their hopes alive,” she said.
Edu said the intervention was also aimed at reducing maternal mortality and ensuring that more women survived childbirth.
The hospital administrator, Mrs Bassey Ephraim, thanked the team for the assistance, saying it had helped ease the financial burden on several patients.
She also commended the state government for its plans to recruit additional doctors and nurses to strengthen healthcare delivery.
Earlier, the team visited Watt Market, Calabar, where it provided N50,000 each to 500 women traders.
The beneficiaries were also encouraged to attend a campaign rally scheduled for the following day in support of the re-election bids of President Bola Tinubu and Governor Bassey Otu.
One of the beneficiaries, Mrs Esther Bassey, from Odukpani Local Government Area, said the state government’s empowerment programmes had helped her sustain her family.
“I am a widow with three children. Our governor has empowered me, and I now have something to do to take care of my children. I will remember this and vote for the APC in 2027,” she said.
