The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has commenced an investigation into the approximately ₦14 billion reportedly paid for the construction of an 11-kilometre section of the Summit Junction–Asaba–Onitsha Head Bridge Road in Delta State.
The investigation is focused on determining whether the level of work executed on the road corresponds with the funds reportedly released to Hartland Nigeria Limited, the contractor handling the project.
A senior EFCC official, who confirmed the development, said investigators had already visited the project site to assess the extent of work completed and verify details surrounding the payments made.
The official said the investigation was still at an early stage and declined to provide further details, stressing that investigators were working to establish the facts.
The probe followed a petition submitted to the EFCC by activist and publisher of The Common Good Letter, Rev. David Ugolor, requesting an independent investigation into the award, funding, execution and supervision of the project.
Ugolor’s petition came after concerns reportedly expressed by the Minister of Works, David Umahi, during his inspection of road projects along the Agbor–Asaba–Onitsha corridor on August 28.
