Lagos, Aug. 25, 2026 (NAN) Lagos State Deputy Gov. Dr Obafemi Hamzat, has described the demise of veteran Nollywood actor, Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, as painful and irreplaceable loss to Nigeria.
This is contained in a statement signed by Hamzat’s Senior Special Assistant on Media, Mr Tunde Alao, on Tuesday in Lagos.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Hassan died on Aug. 23, aged 66, after a prolonged battle with cancer.
Hamzat said that Ogogo, who was widely celebrated for his decades-long contributions to the Yoruba-language film industry, left a vacuum that would be difficult to fill.
“On behalf of the Lagos State Government and indeed in my personal capacity, i received the news of the passing of our dear brother, Taiwo Hassan, fondly called Ogogo, with deep sorrow.
“This is a great loss, not only to his family, but to Nigeria as well. Ogogo was a cultural icon whose work spanned over four decades, helped shaped and popularised yoruba films, both locally and on the global stage,” he said.
The deputy governor noted that the late actor’s legacy would endure through his numerous films, performances and creative works, that had entertained, educated and inspired generations of Nigerians.
“Ogogo was more than an entertainer; he was a custodian of our culture and tradition, who used his craft to project the rich heritage of the Yoruba people to the world.
“His versatility as an actor, producer, screenwriter and director set him apart as one of the pillars of the Nigerian movie industry,” he added.
The deputy governor commended the resilience and courage displayed by the late actor and his family during the period of his illness, describing it as a testament to strength of character.
He hoped for the continued growth of the Nigerian entertainment industry, stressing that the legacy of the late actor would continue to inspire upcoming talents.
Hamzat expressed his condolences to Ogogo’s wives, children and his entire family, colleagues in the Yoruba film industry and the broader Nollywood community.
He prayed for the repose of Ogogo’s soul and strength for those he left behind to bear the repairable loss.
“I pray that Almighty God grant his soul eternal rest and grant his family, friends and admirers the strength to bear this huge loss,” he said.(NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
