The appointment of members to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Campaign Council for the 2027 general election reflects a deliberate choice based on experience, capacity, and political sagacity.
In this regard, the appointment of Comrade Governor Nasir Idris, Kauran Gwandu of Kebbi State, to head the Campaign Council’s Directorate of Labour Union Relations is both strategic and commendable.
Comrade Governor Idris brings decades of labour leadership experience, having served as Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) at local and state levels, National Treasurer and President of NUT, and later Deputy National President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).
His track record includes landmark reforms such as the extension of teachers’ retirement from 35 to 40 years of service and from 60 to 65 years of age.
As Governor and unionist, he has also mediated successfully between the federal government and labour during industrial disputes, a role recently acknowledged by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris.
Leaders of the NUT and NLC, past and present, including Comrades Abdulwaheed Ibrahim Umar, Ayuba Wabba, Joe Ajaero, and Audu Titus Amba, have consistently consulted with Governor Idris in Birnin Kebbi on national labour matters.
Politically, the Governor has galvanized APC members and stakeholders in Kebbi State, including those who returned to the party after contesting elsewhere.
His efforts have strengthened APC’s dominance and boosted confidence ahead of 2027.
Notably, Governor Nasir Idris was the first state governor to endorse President Tinubu for a second term at the APC Zonal meeting in Kaduna.
His appointment as Head of the Directorate of Labour Union Relations is, therefore, a clear case of “putting a round peg in a round hole.” Insha Allah, it will deliver the desired results for the Renewed Hope Agenda.
