The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Anambra State Sector Command, has recovered a double-barrel gun from the scene of a road traffic crash along the Awka–Enugu Expressway.

The recovery was disclosed in a statement issued by the Deputy Corps Commander and Corps Public Education Officer at the FRSC Headquarters, Abuja, Osondu Ohaeri.

According to the statement, the firearm was discovered on Friday at about 2:30 p.m. while an FRSC rescue patrol team was conducting a routine inventory of victims’ belongings after completing rescue operations at the accident scene.

The officers reportedly found the gun concealed among luggage inside one of the crashed vehicles. In line with standard operational procedures, the rescue team immediately secured the weapon to prevent unauthorized access or possible misuse.

The FRSC said the firearm was handed over to the Nigeria Police Force after no individual came forward to claim it and no valid documentation for the weapon was available at the time of recovery. The police are expected to carry out further investigation.

Reacting to the development, Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed commended the professionalism, vigilance, and integrity displayed by the rescue personnel. He noted that the incident highlights the FRSC’s growing contribution to national security beyond its primary responsibility of road safety and emergency rescue operations.

Mohammed explained that although the Corps is principally tasked with preventing road crashes, rescuing victims, and ensuring safer highways, its officers often serve as first responders whose alertness has led to the recovery of stolen vehicles, dangerous weapons, and other items of security interest.

He reaffirmed the Corps’ commitment to strengthening collaboration with other security and law enforcement agencies to improve public safety, protect lives and property, and support national security efforts.

The Corps Marshal also urged motorists and other road users to remain law-abiding and promptly report any suspicious activities observed along the nation’s highways.

The FRSC reiterated its commitment to professionalism, transparency, accountability, and strict adherence to operational procedures in carrying out its statutory responsibilities across the country.
