The Chairman of Onitsha South Local Government Area, Hon. Emeka Orji, has commenced a large-scale drainage desilting and road sand clearance exercise as part of efforts to reduce flooding and improve road safety during the rainy season.
The environmental sanitation campaign, which began on July 1, is currently being carried out along the Uga Junction Express Road and other major roads across the council area.
According to the local government, the exercise involves clearing blocked drainage channels, removing accumulated silt and debris, and evacuating sand deposits left on roads by heavy rainfall. The initiative is aimed at ensuring the free flow of rainwater, reducing the risk of flooding, and creating safer roads for motorists, pedestrians, and other road users.
Residents have praised the intervention, describing it as a timely response to the recurring flooding challenges experienced during the rainy season. They expressed hope that the continuous maintenance of drainage systems and roadways would help safeguard lives and property while promoting a cleaner environment throughout the local government.
Hon. Orji reiterated his administration’s commitment to environmental sustainability, noting that sanitation and infrastructure maintenance would remain key priorities in delivering a cleaner, safer, and healthier community.
He also urged residents to support the initiative by disposing of waste responsibly and avoiding the dumping of refuse into drainage channels. According to him, proper waste management is essential for maintaining an efficient drainage system and preventing future flooding.
