Members and stakeholders of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) in Anambra State have expressed concern over what they described as attempts to undermine and sideline the party’s State Chairman, Mr. David Patrick Chukwudifu.
The concerns were raised during a peaceful rally held in Onitsha on Thursday, where party supporters publicly declared their confidence in the Chairman. Protesters carried placards condemning the alleged interference in the party’s State structure and accused Senator Tony Nwoye, representing Anambra North Senatorial District, of playing a role in the ongoing dispute.
Speaking to journalists during the rally, party stakeholder Mr. Stephen Ajaraogu said members would no longer accept what he termed persistent efforts to weaken the recognized leadership of the party in the State.
According to him, loyal party members who had contributed significantly to the growth and development of the NDC should not be pushed aside now that the party is gaining wider recognition.
He warned those allegedly attempting to hijack the party structure to desist, stressing that similar actions had previously destabilized the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Ajaraogu noted that the rally, organized by NDC youths in Anambra State, was aimed at sending a clear message to both the State and National leadership of the party that the current situation could harm the party’s progress.
“As far as the NDC in Anambra State is concerned, all party activities should be conducted through the recognized leadership headed by the State Chairman, Mr. David Patrick Chukwudifu,” he stated.
Also speaking at the event, Mrs. Nkechi Aneke urged politicians allegedly involved in the crisis to allow the Chairman to continue leading the party without interference. She praised Chukwudifu for his dedication, sacrifices, and financial contributions toward building the party.
Aneke described the rally as a demonstration of solidarity and support for the Chairman, whom she said had remained committed to the party despite challenges.
“He remains the only Chairman we recognize in Anambra State,” she said, while cautioning against any attempt to impose an alternative leadership structure on the party.
The Group further warned against any alleged moves to take control of the party structure in disregard of the leadership currently recognized by members in the State.
