The Vice Chancellor of the University of Jos, Prof. Tanko Ishaya, has solicited the support of the Police on the safety of staff and students of the university.
Ishaya made the appeal when he visited the Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr Bartholomew Onyeka, on Thursday, in Jos.
The vice chancellor, who requested the establishment of a Police Post around the University campus, disclosed that it has secured a grant from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND) for the completion of the University’s fence.
He explained that such a move would stop encroachment on its land, which had posed a serious threat to the university over the years.
Ishaya explained that management of the institution had decided to rehabilitate facilities at the students’ hostels, hence the need for the upward review of the accommodation charges.
Responding, Onyeka, who expressed happiness over the visit, promised to sustain the relationship that has existed between the Police and the university.
He also promised that the command would always provide the necessary support to the institution.
“We will continue to discharge our duty of ensuring the safety of lives and property of all citizens.
“We will not rest on our oars in waging war against people with questionable characters and tendencies of causing confusion in the society,” he said.
Onyeka, however, called on students of the university and law abiding Nigerians to be peaceful and support law enforcement agencies to rid the society of bad eggs.
