The Adamawa State governorship candidate of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), Abdulrahman Haske, has called on the public and the media to assess political leaders objectively, based on their records, experience, and policy proposals, ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
Speaking to journalists in Yola, Haske stressed that no serious politician can succeed without the media. He urged reporters to uphold professionalism by ensuring their reports are accurate, balanced, and fact-checked.
The APM candidate emphasised the need for continued professionalism, verification of information, and objectivity in political reporting, especially as the 2027 general elections approach.
Haske acknowledged the challenges of political competition and stated: “Candidates should be assessed objectively based on their records, experience and policy proposals rather than perceptions or personal attributes such as age.”
He also highlighted the difficulties he faces as a young politician, including bullying, and appealed to journalists to approach political reporting with fairness and professionalism.
Responsible media coverage, he said, is essential for promoting informed public discourse and enabling voters to make decisions based on credible information.
With political activities intensifying, Haske underscored the media’s role in providing accurate information, scrutinising candidates’ claims, and holding political actors accountable.
He maintained that professional reporting including fact-checking, balanced coverage, and a clear distinction between facts and political claims remains vital to strengthening public trust in the media and the democratic process.
Haske called on journalists to give political actors a fair hearing and to avoid publishing unverified information that could mislead the public or undermine confidence in the electoral process.
